5 Reasons to Add Variety to Your Workout

We know what you’re thinking: What if I like doing only one thing? Let’s start by saying  that we, as fitness enthusiasts, believe that any movement towards improving your wellness is amazing in our book. That being said, if you enjoy jogging, weight lifting, or yoga, it doesn’t mean you don’t have the potential to allow the three of them to compliment each other.

Here are 5 reasons why you should add variety to your workout!

Adaptation is the Enemy

In everyday life, we often use the word ‘adaptation’ as a positive meaning against the word ‘resistance’. This is true everywhere except in fitness. Your body, being the incredible machine it is, needs resistance to defy its own limitations and grow healthier. When you want to lose weight or grow muscles, you need equipment like weights, bands, bars, or even your own body weight to challenge your body to grow its muscles and use its energy to match the resistance you’re throwing at it. What you might not know is, your body adapts to these resistances and eventually it will stop perceiving them as challenging. The more you repeat the same moves, the less effort your body makes to pull them off.

Predictability Diminishes Motivation

Sticking to a workout schedule is not easy. You need constant pushes to get you to even start your workout everyday. Whether you realize it or not, repetition plays a big role in needing to convince yourself to follow your routine. Would you rather play a video game over and over again at the exact same level with the exact same sequence? Or would you prefer to play a video game with progressive levels and new sequences and instructions at every round? Which of these two do you think you would be more motivated to play? Knowing exactly how your workout session is going to go will diminish your motivation to better yourself.

Risking a Plateau

The term ‘plateau’ is usually used in fitness to define the situation when your body stops progressing because it adapted to the exercises you’ve been doing. Your body wouldn’t move backward, but it wouldn’t move forward either. As mentioned before, your body learns with repetition and therefore exerts less effort. Soon, the purpose behind your workout will become solely focused on maintaining the point you have reached, but not progressing further.

Promote Adherence

With new ways, different methods, and interesting challenges, comes a drive to keep moving forward. When you wake up in the morning excited to see what’s installed for you today in your workout plan, you wouldn’t be able to get out of bed fast enough. Excitement can be fueled by any changes; maybe you love the songs played during today’s session or class, or you enjoy the exercises. Whatever it is, every new day comes with a new push forward so you can keep up your progress despite anything standing in your way.

Surprise Yourself

Let’s say you decided to add variety by increasing the weights you use, or by adding distance to your regular jogging path, you have introduced a positive change, but you know you are capable of so much more. You are excelling in boxing class and you can now do 3 different types of squats, but did you know that yoga can actually improve your boxing form and your ability to squat even lower? In addition, boxing and squats promote flexibility and certain strengths which help with yoga poses. A variety in the types of workout you do compliment each other so you can achieve your best potential in every part of your weekly routine!

5 Ways Fitness Helps Mental Health

At a time when life is moving hastily and relentlessly enough to make it hard to catch up, the only thing you can control is your own health and wellbeing. If life is spiraling chaotically, does that mean you should too? How do you shut it all out and embrace your own wellbeing? By focusing on the small things in your everyday life.

Here are 5 ways fitness helps improve your mental health!

Exercise and Productivity

Yes, you have to stay home today, but that doesn’t mean you are not obliged to be productive. You need to work, organize your tasks of the day, clean, cook, and fix that leaking sink that’s been driving you crazy, but you feel too discouraged to focus on anything at all. How do you get yourself to start the day? There is no stronger booster than a workout. Exercise is proven to help boost your energy, brain power, and even your memory! There is no better way to start a productive day. We know it’s our favorite!

Improve Your Sleep

Have you ever found it harder to sleep when you’ve spent the whole day home? The fact is, when you haven’t burned enough energy, it makes it harder to fall asleep and recharge. Dare we even mention the stress that puts a big strain on your sleep cycle as it is. Fortunately, there is a way to burn off all that energy and stress at once. Working out at home serves as a way for you to let out all the anxiety you accumulated and tire you enough to crave a good night’s sleep. Start a workout routine during the day so you can end it with a deep peaceful slumber.

A Buffer Against Anxiety

We have mentioned above that stress greatly affects your sleep, but the fact is that’s not the only thing it affects. Anxiety can take over your work, thoughts, and conversations. You find yourself talking about one thing over and over again with friends and family. The next time your friend on the phone asks: “How’s working from home going for you?”, instead of letting the anxiety seep in from that daily reminder, tell your friend about the online spinning class you took today and good it feels after! Sweat out your anxiety and let the positivity glow on you until your next workout!

Better Your Mood

It’s getting to you; the news, the numbers, the uncertainty, and the comments. You find yourself getting angry at things that never angered you before, or snapping at people you’ve never snapped at before. When was the last time you found yourself smiling just because you are in a good mood today? A good mood does not just exist, you make it happen, and what better way than to laugh at the way you’re moving your hips during online cardio baladi, or smile with gratitude when your personal trainer is congratulating you for a good workout session. Help yourself stay in a good place and let those endorphins fly with fitness!

Social Support

We all need a little socialization, some days more than others. The person running on the treadmill next to you at the gym, or the person lying next to you in HIIT class attempting to do a pike pushup too, Those people used to serve as motivational sources for you to keep going, and who’s to say they can’t do it now too? Meet your friend on zoom, who you used to go to Zumba class with, and dance it out virtually together in an online Zumba class instead. Find the connections with others you need now more than ever through exercise because fitness brings us together with a mutual adoration to improve ourselves and our quality of life.
